For (oral) stops, the velum is raised, blocking the nasal cavity, so that no air can escape through either the mouth or the nose. As air continues to travel from the lungs into the oral cavity, pressure in the mouth will build up behind the constriction. When the articulators then come apart, for the production of a the next speech sound, the air pressure will be released in a small burst of sound.<…> This burst of sound can be considered a small explosion and that is why stop consonants are also known as plosives. |
